McHargue says NEFB discussions continue for tax reform in Nebraska

Nebraska Farm Bureau President Mark McHargue says the organization is working to improve the state’s tax structure to help grow the ag economy. “There is lots of conversations going on about comprehensive tax reform.  What’s that going to look like? What are the parts and the pieces? We’ve been involved in those conversations considerably this summer and look forward to engaging as we move into the fall on that.”

He tells Brownfield a balanced approach would help provide property tax relief. “And when we say balance, we mean a property tax, sales tax and an income tax,” he says. “Right now, we need about another $900 to $950 million relief to the property tax side of the equation to be balanced.”

He says the relief might come from eliminating some exemptions and taxing the service industry.

McHargue spoke with Brownfield during the Nebraska Ag and Economic Development Summit in Kearney last week.
