Merck announces next steps on Zilmax

cattle feedlot-milford 5-13Merck Animal Health says it has made significant progress in its plan to bring its beta agonist Zilmax back on the market.

Merck suspended sales of the growth-promoting feed additive last year when concerns emerged that it might cause lameness in cattle.

On Wednesday, the company provided an update to its five-step plan to revive the product.  The plan includes a certification program for users of Zilmax, label modifications and closely-monitored field trials.

Merck says the FDA has approved an updated label to include “component feeding”, an alternative method of administering Zilmax using a targeted lower dose.  The company notes that a comprehensive review of the product shows it is safe when used according to its product label and in conjunction with sound animal husbandry practices.

Merck did not provide a timeline on when Zilmax may be reintroduced.
