Michigan beef checkoff raising assessments

The Michigan Beef Industry Commission has voted to renew a state-level checkoff.

Chairman Monte Bordner tells Brownfield state collections will increase from 50 cents to $1 per head starting January 1st.

“We have dealt with a pretty serious decline in revenue, and it’s been reflected in the inability to do programming,” he shares.

For the past 40 years, the commission has received half of the federal dollar-per-head checkoff revenue and efforts to increase the rate in Michigan have been ongoing for a decade.

Bordner says feedback during listening sessions this summer was mostly well-received.

“There was no opposition to the increase in the checkoff assessment, zero opposition,” he shares.

The increase is expected to add an additional $500,000 to their budget which Bordner says will also help Michigan producers better utilize resources at the National Beef Checkoff.
