Michigan Farm Bureau strives to end childhood hunger

Michigan’s farm community is on a mission to eradicate hunger.

President Carl Bednarski tells Brownfield the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies is transitioning into a For-Purpose business dedicated to hunger relief efforts.

“We’re going to solve this issue,” he says.

The organization has been partnering with the University of Michigan to identify areas of food insecurity and nutrition assistance shortcomings.

“In the studies that we’ve been doing now for the last couple of years, we’re finding that it isn’t in the urban areas, we’re seeing it in our rural communities where we have children that are food insecure,” he says.

A recent survey found eight of the top 10 food-insecure counties in Michigan are in rural areas.

Bednarski says a more unified effort is expected to engage farmer members and ag industry partners moving forward as they work to overcome food insecurity in the state.

Brownfield interviewed Bednarski during this week’s Michigan Farm Bureau Annual Meeting.
