Michigan grain harvest slightly behind

soybean-harvest-mid-october-columbus-10-16Michigan’s grain crops are maturing on pace for the season while harvest is slightly behind average.

The Great Lakes Regional Ag Statistics office says 89 percent of the state’s corn crop has matured, slightly ahead of the five year average. The crop’s condition increased a point to 53 percent good to excellent.  Corn silage harvested was 90 percent complete as of Sunday, grain harvest was 16 percent.  Soybeans are 94 percent dropping leaves, 33 percent harvested and soybean condition dropped three points to 67 percent good to excellent.  Fifty-six percent of winter wheat has been planted.

Dry beans are 99 percent dropping leaves and 83 percent harvested. Sugarbeet condition dropped two points to 69 percent good to excellent and 27 percent of the crop is harvested.  The third cutting of alfalfa is 93 percent complete, fourth cutting is at 60 percent.

Apple harvest is more than half way complete with many growers expecting the season to be completed at the end of the month. Grape and cranberry harvest continues.
