Midwest Farm Bureau presidents call for end to China trade disputes

Ten state Farm Bureau presidents from across the Midwest are calling for an end to trade disputes with China. And they’ve sent a letter to U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue urging him to work with President Trump to help end those disputes.

Jordan Dux, director of national affairs for Nebraska Farm Bureau, says they recognize there are issues that need to be addressed in the trading relationship between the U.S. and China—but not at the expense of a trade war.

“We acknowledge that there are issues that the President can target, and certainly issues the administration can work out with China,” Dux says. “But at the same time, making sure we handle those issues and work through some of those issues delicately is going to be extremely important.”

In a letter to Perdue, the Farm Bureau leaders stress that farmers and ranchers want access to markets, not checks from federal government in lieu of trade opportunities. That comment is in response to Trump’s call for Perdue to develop a plan to provide monetary compensation to farmers who may be hurt by possible Chinese trade sanctions.

The letter was signed by Farm Bureau presidents from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
