Milk price volatility a factor in 2023

Price volatility stands out as a Minnesota dairy farmer reflects on 2023.

Dan Glessing of Waverly tells Brownfield the past year has been a rollercoaster.

“It went from good to not very good, and then kind of moderated.”

He says milk prices the past six months have been around break-even.

“Now, a break-even is different for every farm, but almost break-even is hard to justify in your mind that you’re going to almost make a profit. So it certainly looks like it’s going to be challenging for the foreseeable future.”

Glessing serves as president of Minnesota Farm Bureau and says dairy farmers will have to reexamine how to lower cost of production if these price levels are the new normal.
