Minnesota corn, soybean development ahead of normal

Crop development in Minnesota continues to run ahead of normal.

The latest USDA crop progress report says 92 percent of corn is at or beyond silking as of Sunday, a week ahead of the five-year average.

Jerry Demmer grows corn and soybeans near Clarks Grove in southeast Minnesota.

“I’ve heard reports we’re further ahead with GDU’s, which is great.  Let’s move on with the season and get this corn fully dented.”

Demmer tells Brownfield despite some potholes, he believes this has the potential to be an excellent crop.

Soybean development is also pacing ahead of average, with 88 percent of the crop blooming and nearly 60 percent setting pods.

Crop condition ratings have been mostly steady, with 79 percent of corn and 75 percent of soybeans rated good to excellent.

And the harvesting of small grains got underway last week with 15 percent of the oat for grain crop taken out.
