Minnesota Farm Bureau president says corn harvest going good, but stands are an issue

Kevin Paap

A south central Minnesota farmer says corn harvest is off to an excellent start but there are concerns about stalk quality.

Kevin Paap says the weather in Blue Earth County has allowed him to combine every day.

“Also a big help with drying down in the field, letting mother nature dry the crop versus having to add heat.”

He tells Brownfield yields are good and in some locations it should be the best crop raised in a lifetime.

Paap says worries over corn stands are warranted, however.

“Today I’m actually combining a field in a direction specifically because of stalk breakage.  We’ve had a lot of wind, but certainly the biotech varieties are proving their worth this year.”

Paap cautions anyone traveling rural roads that dust is a major problem because of dry and windy weather, and conditions like these can also lead to combine fires if preventative steps aren’t taken.
