Minnesota farmer circles September 20th for corn harvest

A west-central Minnesota farmer has circled September 20th to begin harvesting corn.

Brian Velde of Granite Falls says a lot of his corn has black-layered.

“So just giving another good two weeks of drying, I think we’ll actually be combining corn this year before soybeans.”

He tells Brownfield most of his soybeans are still relatively green and doesn’t expect a lot of soybean combining in September.

“If it is, it would be the last few days (of September).  Most of it will probably happen in October.  I think we’ll probably put on the corn head and get after the corn when it’s at 17, 18 percent.”

Velde says it has been too wet most of the season, and with drown-outs factored in, he’s probably looking at an average crop.
