Minnesota Farmers Union leader not surprised by trade war

The president of the Minnesota Farmers Union anticipated the trade dispute with China would play out much like it has.

“To be honest, this is really what I thought was going to happen. I know the President said trade wars are easy to win when he announced the tariffs, and I figured that was very optimistic on his part.”

Gary Wertish says President Trump’s trade tactics have damaged the reputation of the U.S.

“I’ve had discussions with leaders of other countries and they’ve flat-out told us they don’t view the United States as a reliable trading partner right now. That’s the part I’m really concerned about.”

Wertish tells Brownfield going after China alone was a mistake and says he’s not very optimistic about a breakthrough in trade talks happening this week.
