Mixed March precipitation in Kentucky

Kentucky saw mixed precipitation during March.

The USDA says that on average, statewide precipitation was below normal, but parts of the state saw a more favorable pattern than other areas, which helped winter wheat ratings hold.

88% of Kentucky’s winter wheat crop is in good to excellent shape, 1% less than at the end of February, but 9% more than this time last year.

This was the eighth warmest winter on record for Kentucky, with the average statewide temperature for March 5 degrees above normal.

Just over half of the state has an adequate supply of hay, a little bit better than last month, but well below last year, and 67% of livestock is in good to excellent condition.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume next Monday.
