MN Senator says farm bill budget still unknown

A U.S. Senator from Minnesota says the farm bill budget is still being negotiated.

Amy Klobuchar tells Brownfield it could be early fall before the details are finalized and the current farm bill expires at the end of September.

“We have to get a bill passed by then or an extension through the end of the year, which happens, and around then, we’ll hear more about money amounts.”

In the meantime, Klobuchar says lawmakers will continue to review and discuss feedback from ag stakeholders. She says a few of her priorities include continued investments in the animal disease vaccine bank and to maintain crop insurance.

“No one knows the importance of crop insurance better than Minnesota farmers right now with what we’re seeing with the dry weather and how it could affect production.”

She says farm bill listening sessions will continue this summer, including a discussion at Minnesota’s Farmfest in early August.
