MO Senator: foreign ag land executive order is “not enough”

A state senator in Missouri says a new executive order from Governor Mike Parson doesn’t do enough to address foreign owned agricultural land in the state.

Bill Eigel tells Brownfield a total ban is needed and he is supporting amendments to the state constitution to fully ban foreign ownership of land across the state.

“We don’t have an exception for any foreign entity to own any agricultural land in the state. I understand there are foreign entities in this state that own land for a variety of purposes, not just agriculture, but research and development as well.”

He says while state lawmakers couldn’t agree on a solution to foreign ag land ownership last year, lawmakers are ready to act this session, which started on Wednesday.
