MPP deadline is June 1st

Dairy farmers have until Friday to begin the process of enrolling in the updated Margin Protection Program.

Minnesota Farm Service Agency executive director Joe Martin tells Brownfield producers who can’t make it into their local FSA office need to reach out if they’re interested in MPP.

“We will be able to what we call ‘run a register.’  But we do need to hear from you prior to June 1st, but we can do some work after that deadline, but need to hear that you’re interested in signing up for the program before June 1st.”

The program terms for MPP-dairy coverage were changed by Congress earlier this year.

Martin says the risk management tool now features lower premiums, monthly payments instead of bi-monthly, and more attractive margins.

“The way calculations look right now, it’s going to be triggering payments for the last couple months.  And we’re going to be able to deliver those payments in early June.  So if folks get in and sign up for the program, they could see some dollars delivered.”

He directs dairy farmers to the Farm Service Agency website where resources are available to help calculate coverage levels for MPP.
