MU Extension says there’s time for replanting

Some corn growers having to make replanting decisions because of flooding and saturated soils do have some time on their side.

Greg Luce, University of Missouri Extension specialist, tells Brownfield corn can safely be planted through the end of May and into early June in Missouri – BUT – it depends on length of flooding, temperature during flooding and the drying rate. His advice is to stick with planting intentions, not switching corn hybrids, and be prepared to start from scratch. He tells Brownfield Ag News, “If you’re going to replant your corn field, start over. You know, kill that corn out.”

He says the IPM website has recommendations from MU’s Kevin Bradley on how best to kill corn plants. As for soybean replanting, starting completely over isn’t necessary, “If you’re replanting soybeans back where soybeans were, we can fill in and do a good job.”

Luce says every area is different and growers need to not only check their soil conditions but their crop insurance replant dates.  He says the MU Extension guide on Corn and Soybean Replant Decisions is very helpful.
