NAFTA without Canada?

NAFTA talks between the U.S. and Canada resume Wednesday, but President Trump has threatened to leave Canada out of the new deal with Mexico.

Over the weekend, Trump tweeted that it is politically unnecessary to keep Canada in the revised NAFTA.

He added that he will terminate NAFTA if Congress interferes with negotiations. A new NAFTA must be ratified by Congress and the White House began the process on Friday by giving the necessary 90 days’ notice.

Trade officials from both countries say that progress has been made in trade talks despite some disagreements, including the Chapter 19 dispute settlement process for challenging anti-dumping and countervailing measures.
