Naig: Another planting window opening up in Iowa

Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig says planting conditions have been a mixed bag across the state.

“Things slowed down last week with some much-needed rain. This is a bit of a good news, bad news scenario, right? We’re so desperate for rain, we’ve got significant drought that remains in the state of Iowa, but you also have to balance that with trying to get a crop in the ground.”

He tells Brownfield some farmers got an earlier than expected start. “Parts of the state saw a really quick jump, got some acres in the ground. I think when the next window opens, perhaps later this week before we get some more rain, folks are really going to push hard.”

Naig says the last two drought-stricken growing seasons produced better than expected corn and soybean crops.
