NCGA submits comments to CARB

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) has submitted formal comments to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), pointing out flaws in the group’s proposed low carbonfuel standard.

NCGA president Bob Dickey says the proposal ignores the great growth in corn production expected to take place in the coming decade. That growth can happen, Dickey says, without converting more non-crop acres to corn production. He points out that field cornacres are projected to decrease for the second year in a row.

The fate of CARB’s proposal will be decided in hearings this week in Sacramento. The board is looking at land-use impacts an increase in ethanol production causes. Many industry-watchers expect the board todeclare that corn ethanol is no better than petroleum when it comes to dealing with greenhouse-gas emissions.
