Nebraskans hear plea for Korean FTA passage

Officials of Nebraska Farm Bureau are back from their winter lobbying trip to Washington, D.C.

While there, they met with South Korea’s ambassador to the U.S.   The Farm Bureau’s second vice-president, Mark McHargue of Central City, says the Koreans are frustrated with Congress’ failure to pass the free trade agreement with their country.

“They are just anxious to get something done with the United States,” McHargue says. “They are signing agreements with, I believe, Argentina—and I think they have signed one with Canada.  They’ve got some coming up shortly and they said the U.S. is losing out every month we wait and don’t get this thing signed—because they are signing them with other countries.”

McHargue says the Korean Free Trade Agreement would be a big boost for Nebraska agriculture.

The Nebraska group also met with officials of the Justice Department, USDA chief economist Joe Glauber and Bill Murphy of the Risk Management Agency, as well as Nebraska’s congressional delegation.
