New biodiesel plant proposed in northwest Iowa

Backers of a proposed biodiesel plant in northwest Iowa are seeking nearly three million dollars in state incentives, according to the Sioux City Journal.

The proposed ReadiFuels-Iowa plant would produce about 34 million gallons of diesel fuel from distillers corn oil, grease, tallow and other non-edible feedstocks, according to documents filed with the state. The plant would be built on a 77-acre site in rural Sioux County that was partially developed for Bison Renewable Energy beginning in 2006. The Bison project was never completed.

ReadiFuels-Iowa was formed by Applied Research Associates and C&N Biofuels. It would be the nation’s first commercial facility to use a biofuels process developed by ARA and Chevron Lummus Global. A statement on the company’s website says “ReadiFuels produces next generation 100% drop-in renewable jet and diesel fuels and naphtha from a variety of waste fats, oils and greases as well as industrial oil crops/energy oils and algae”.

Construction is expected to begin later this year, according to the Journal article.
