New gene-edited leafy green under development

A gene-edited leafy green is expected to make its market debut in 2022.

Tom Adams is CEO of Pairwise says “It has the health properties of a kale but it has the texture and eating properties of more like a romaine lettuce. So, it provides the consumer something. It’s very productive so it provides the grower a novel opportunity.”

Adams says Pairwise is also working on developing new row crop varieties through gene-editing which allows for much more precision…

“Breeding is a big numbers game. You create big populations and you sort through those big populations to find the combinations that you’re looking for. And when you couple gene editing and breeding you can create more precise outcomes.”

Pairwise is one of the smaller ag innovation companies partnered with Bayer CropScience through its open innovation approach.
