New World Champion Cheese named Thursday

Rebekah Sweeney with the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association tells Brownfield a new world cheese champion was chosen Thursday night. “It was a hard sheep’s milk cheese called Esquirrou made in France at Moliens Fromagerie with imports by Savencia Cheese USA out of Pennsylvania is our new World Champion Cheese.”

There were 3,402 entries from around the world judged in Madison, Wisconsin.  Sweeney says U.S. cheesemakers took gold medals in 87 of the 121 classes of cheese, but the top three were from France, Austria, and Switzerland.

The champion cheesemaker is Michelle Touyarou from the Pyrénées region of France.
