Oats look appealing to some farmers this spring
A small grains specialist expects more oat acres in 2020.
Jochum Wiersma is with the University of Minnesota.
“Contracts are halfway decent, and I think (another) part of the reason we see some switching of acres also has to do with cash flow issues.”
He tells Brownfield it is going to be very difficult to pencil out a profit on corn or soybeans if prices don’t improve.
“But I think more importantly, widening your rotation from two crops to three has a lot of advantages.”
Wiersma says adding a third crop to the rotation helps reduce soybean cyst nematode pressure and aids in controlling herbicide-resistant weeds.
