Ohio Sheep Day to include predator control workshop

With livestock losses to predators on the increase in Ohio, livestock producers are looking for ways to control the likes of coyotes and black vultures.

Roger High, Executive Director of the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association says on Saturday, during the ASI Eastern Region predator control workshop a number of specialists will be on hand to talk about various control methods.

“We’ve got a wildlife biologist who’s a specialist in guard animals and non-lethal control techniques from Ft. Collins, Colorado coming in to speak about those areas,” said High. “Dealing with black vultures, control methods and permitting, trapping and snaring techniques by a professional trapper, as well as utilization of some other methods.”

The predator control workshop will be held in conjunction with the 2014 Ohio Sheep Day on Saturday, July 12 at the Ray Family Farm near Cumberland, Ohio.

“The Ray Farm is a sheep, goat and cattle farm,” High said. “We’re going to show producers a number of things on the farm and also give the producers an example of things they can do with nutrients, lime, pasture improvement and EQIP practices for sheep and goat operations will be a key part of the program.”
