OSU establishes quarterly fertilizer survey

Ohio State University Extension has launched a quarterly fertilizer survey to help farmers create more accurate farm budgets.

Farm Management Field Specialist Eric Richer tells Brownfield the results should increase cost transparency.

“We know that sometimes prices that are quoted on national outlets have a different amount of basis tied to them and may not be exactly accurate for the farmers as they work and farm in their local communities,” he says.

He says the survey at the end of December found significant declines for some products.

“Our logistics have changed, our prices have changed,” he says. “What we were looking at two years ago say for instance anhydrous, perhaps the product that has made the most gains, we’re at about half of what we were in the high of January ‘22.”

Richer says prices collected are based on what a farmer would pay to pick up dry fertilizer products at facilities and the price for liquid products delivered without additional services.
