Perdue reaffirms support for the Renewable Fuel Standard
U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue reaffirmed administration support for the Renewable Fuel Standard. Farmers, especially corn growers, were concerned about talk that prices might be capped on Renewable Identification Numbers, or RINs, diminishing the effectiveness of the Renewable Fuel Standard. “I have not and will not support any policies in this country that diminish the demand, undermine RFS and are harmful to our agricultural producers,” Perdue told the audience, who responded with sustained applause. “I will not.”
Secretary Perdue’s comments were made, however, with no direct reference to RINs. Kansas corn grower Ken McCauley told Brownfield that his and other growers’ concerns may have made their way to the Secretary before Wednesday’s appearance.
“I think they found out real quick that farmers do understand and how important the RINs are to the RFS,” McCauley told Brownfield Ag News following Perdue’s address.
Perdue told reporters following his talk that he’s open to further education on the RIN connection to ethanol demand, but added, “I fail to understand how the collaboration or the connection between RIN prices and demand and RVO volume work together.”
