Perdue says shutting down the U.S.-Mexico border could negatively impact trade

President Trump has threatened to shutdown the U.S.-Mexican border, and Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says it could negatively impact trade between the two countries.

“It could be certainly harmful from a trade perspective if trade is included in that shutdown,” he says. “I would like to see it not affect agricultural trade in that regard, whether it’s rail or truck, but that may be wishing for too much.”

But, he says he understands there is a crisis that needs to be addressed.

“The first obligation of a president is national security and that means following the rules and having a border security policy,” he says.

Perdue spoke to media Tuesday morning at Purdue University.
