Plan for a wet spring

An agronomist in southeast Minnesota recommends growers plan for a wet spring.

Austin Carlson With AsGrow/Dekalb says most Midwestern soils went into the winter very saturated.

“When I’m thinking about 2020 I’m thinking about which fields might be the first ones that I’m going to go to next spring that will be the first ones I can plant. Maybe even which soybean fields are ready to go if the corn fields aren’t (ready). So just making sure I’ve got that plan ready to go (and) have that planter dialed in.”

He tells Brownfield 2019 really illustrated how small the planting window can be.

“I think maximizing our up-time with those planters, spending time with them now and maybe investing in newer technology can really help us out because those windows have really been small the past few years.”

Carlson says adverse weather can also disrupt weed management in the spring and to plan accordingly.
