Planting around the corner for southwest Iowa farmer

A southwest Iowa farmer says he hopes to start planting in the next couple of weeks.

Ray Gaesser tells Brownfield the drought situation is better than it was this time last year. “We’re still a little bit short on moisture in the soil, not terribly short, but we could use another two or three inches of rain here before planting, if it would happen.”

He says the use of cover crops has helped improve his soil conditions. “We’re finding some real advantages to having that cover crop out there and after we terminate it, it’s kind of protecting the soil and holding the moisture in for the summer.”

Gaesser raises corn and soybeans in Adams County.
