Preserving crop insurance a priority for Minnesota Farm Bureau

Farmer-led organizations continue to call on Congress to protect crop insurance in the next farm bill.

Minnesota Farm Bureau district director Shayne Isane says his group recently visited lawmakers in Washington D.C. to share priorities that include preserving key safety nets.

“That would be the very minimum. If we could make tweaks here and there and actually buy up better coverage, that would be great (and) is a concern we have. But (crop insurance) is a very valuable program.”

Isane grows corn, soybeans, wheat, rye grass, and has beef cattle in northwest Minnesota.

“Two years ago we had some severe drought, and we along with a lot of farmers in my area relied on that crop insurance. And it was a savior for a lot of farms.”

He tells Brownfield other farm bill topics discussed during the annual D.C. fly-in included conservation and dairy risk management programs.
