Producer involvement in combating resistance

A New Mexico cattle producer says livestock producers need to be engaged in the conversations about combating antibiotic resistance.

Cow/Calf operator Jay Hill took part in a panel discussion with members of the feed industry, veterinarians, and the pharmaceutical industry at the National Institute of Animal Agriculture’s Antibiotic Symposium.

He says as a beef producer – its key to be part of these conversations.  “We’re learning what the CDC, the FDA, and other agencies and organizations are doing to start to address in regards to regulations,” he says.  “We’re also learning what we’re going to see coming down the pipeline as of January 1, 2017 as it relates to the VFDs.”

Hill says there is a lot of fine print in the VFD – and like any new regulation it will take an adjustment period for all the stakeholders in the livestock industry.
