Producers battle production costs

An eastern Illinois farmer says the cost of production is one of his biggest concerns heading into the next growing season.

John Yeley raises corn, soybeans, and wheat on 3,000 acres near Marshall. “I probably grossed the most money that I’ve ever grossed off of the farm this year,” he said, “but at the end of the day I made less money than I did in 2020.”

He tells Brownfield grain prices have been favorable, but… “You’re not getting that nice reward that you normally would get from having a good crop with good prices,” Yeley said. “You’re just passing the buck down the road. I always love putting the crop in and out, but it’s just everything else that makes me lose my hair.”

Yeley says input prices are showing no signs of slowing down.
