R-CALF USA: leave FMD restrictions in place

R-CALF USA is against USDA recognizing the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, as free of foot-and-mouth disease, rinderpest, classical swine fever, African swine fever, and swine vesicular disease.

R-CALF says it’s inaccurate and unscientific to lift foot-and-mouth disease restrictions there because of Santa Catarina’s proximity to Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul, which have each had FMD cases in the last four and five years respectively.

Such a move could result in the introduction of FMD in the United States, according to Bill Bullard, CEO of R-CALF USA. He says there have been too many near misses because of what he calls USDA’s unrealistic, inaccurate and unscientific evaluation of the true risks of FMD.
