Revitalizing the Great Lakes

Senator Joe Donnelly at the 2012 Indiana Farm Bureau Convention.

A group of Senators is supporting legislation designed to protect and revitalize the Great Lakes.  Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly says the Great Lakes Ecological and Economic Protection Act (GLEEPA) would provide funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiate, an Environmental Protection Agency Great Lakes Program Office, and reauthorize the Great Lakes Legacy Act.  “This is a partnership with our ag community,” he says.  “The best methods of being able to maintain soil on the land and being able to keeping the nitrogen and phosphorus on the farm are ideas that we get from our farmers.”

Opposed to solutions being imposed by Washington.  “What we’re doing is working with our farmers to make sure the sediment stays on the farm,” he says.  “That helps to provide a cleaner river, a safer river, and help to provide cleaner Great Lakes. So really, it’s a win-win all around.”

Senators from Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois are also co-sponsors of the legislation.
