Senator: farm bill discussions continue
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown says the Senate Agriculture Committee has begun discussing the 2023 Farm Bill.
“We are already talking about how we begin to gather information so the farm bill can be on time this year,” he says. “It’s important because agriculture is changing fast. We see the challenges in terms of input costs for farmers.”
He tells Brownfield it’s important to hear farmer concerns and priorities.
“As a member of the agriculture committee I listen to farmers talk about their needs, for example, in infrastructure…the bipartisan farm bill will not just work on big bridges and broadband, it will also replace culvert bridges that are in various levels of decay,” he says. “We hear about getting products to market, the cost of fertilizer, concentration in the meatpacking industry, and more.”
Brown says farm bill listening sessions with growers and agriculture leaders in his state will begin soon.
“I spend a good bit of time doing roundtables with farmers all parts of agriculture in Ohio,” he says. “…It’s time to begin that pretty soon.”
Brown, a democrat, is a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
