Senators seek to stop newly-allowed Paraguay beef imports

Two Senators are working to overturn the Biden Administration’s rule allowing beef imports from Paraguay.

Montana Senator Jon Tester and South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds have introduced a Congressional Review Act.  If passed, the CRA would overturn USDA’s final rule.

U.S. Cattlemen’s Association President Justin Tupper tells Brownfield Paraguay has a long history of disease that cannot be allowed into the U.S. “They still have concerns of Foot and Mouth Disease. We haven’t been in there to inspect their facilities in years. There are not processes in place to ensure that safety.”

Bill Bullard with R-CALF USA tells Brownfield USDA’s final rule allows Paraguay to send beef to the U.S. right now. “This resolution of disapproval will halt the imports from Paraguay, and essentially stop USDA from engaging in this very irresponsible and risky endeavor.”

Both Tupper and Bullard would have liked the Congressional Review Act to include Brazil, which also has a long history of foot and mouth disease.
