Six Minnesota pigs had H1N1

U.S. Department of Agriculture confirms six pigs at the Minnesota State Fair had the H1N1 virus. The first case was confirmed on October 19th while the results of confirmatory tests were pending on other samples taken at the fair.

The Ag Department is awaiting the results of tests on six more pigs with preliminary positives; some of those samples were collected at the South Dakota State Fair.

A total of 57 pigs were sampled at the Minnesota State Fair and 45 at South Dakota. The samples were taken as part of a project funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. USDA says there are no plans to conduct further tests on samples which tested negative for H1N1.

Health officials say it is likely the hogs contracted the disease from people attending the fair and stressed you cannot get the virus from eating pork.
