Smithfield reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Smithfield has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at several of its facilities across the U.S. by installing or upgrading manure digesters.

The company says it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2025 by implementing “manure-to-energy” projects across 90 percent of their hog finishing spaces in North Carolina and Utah, and nearly all spaces in Missouri over the next decade.

President and CEO Kenneth Sullivan says the investment underscores a longstanding commitment to sustainability as well as their promise to produce good food in a responsible way.

When complete, nearly all of the company’s finishing barns in Missouri will be able to produce enough biogas to power more than 15,000 homes each year.

The company also plans to cut carbon emission by reducing truck traffic, installing vegetative buffers and with several other projects from field to processors.
