Some corn and soybean harvesting begins in Indiana

Harvest began on a few farms in Indiana last week and an agronomy expert says conditions are favorable in the northern part of the state.

Dr. Kess Berg with Advanced Agrilytics says timely rains in July and early August helped advance the corn crop. “We’re starting to see this crop mature fairly rapidly because some of the dryness and timing,” he said. “But we’re still probably 20 days from that maturity of corn.”

He tells Brownfield, “Soybeans on the other stage are really coming along as well,” Berg said. “You’re starting to see some leaves drop and I would imagine folks will be getting in the field in the next 10 days or so.”

USDA says there was little precipitation across the state last week making it very dry going into harvest.
