Southern Minnesota farmer harvesting remarkably “average” soybean crop

A farmer in south-central Minnesota is harvesting what he calls an average soybean crop.

Kevin Paap of Garden City tells Brownfield the weather has allowed five days of harvest activity so far.

“You know, our soybeans are averaging less than about one percent above last year’s yields, they average less than one percent below our five-year average. So pretty much an average crop.”

But he suggests that’s pretty remarkable considering the dryness of the growing season.

“Considering this a win in my perspective with less than 14 inches of rain that we’ve had since they were planted.”

Paap says he hopes to be as pleasantly surprised with corn but worries yields will suffer given he had to replant about 40 percent because of a wet spring.
