Still assessing storm damage

It’s been almost a week since a storm that brought damaging winds and hail blew through parts of Indiana.

Dave Lowe farms in Jay County, Ind.; he says the damage in the corn is pretty substantial.  “The corn got off to a fast start and probably was the best looking corn crop until last Wednesday,” he says.  “But we’ve had a lot of wind, we’ve had hail, we’ve got corn down, and we have green snap.”

Lowe tells Brownfield things have improved a bit since last week.  He says he’s pleasantly surprised with the recovery in soybeans.  “The beans probably are going to be okay,” he says.  “They’ve recovered quite a bit since the hail.  We’re seeing foliage coming back on now – but it was pretty scary for the first 24 hours afterwards.”

In a week or so he says they’ll have a better estimate of the full extent of the damage to the corn crop.
