Sugarbeet planting leads

Freezing, wet conditions continued to stall fieldwork in Michigan last week.

As of Sunday, the USDA says sugarbeets are 85 percent planted and 30 percent emerged, ahead of last year and the five-year average.  Soybeans are 15 percent planted and corn is six percent, both behind last year and average.

Winter wheat condition maintained its 64 percent good to excellent rating with 42 percent jointed.

Asparagus grower Nick Oomaen tells Brownfield harvest is expected in the next week. “It seems to be pretty up and down, I think we’re on track for a like a 20-year average typical start date for us,” he says.

Fruit growers are assessing crop damage from recent cold weather.
