Things deteriorate a little in Wisconsin

Despite scattered showers, overall drought conditions got a little worse across the Badger State last week. The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service Wisconsin Field Office shows 26 percent of the soil is now very short of moisture compared to 23 percent last week. 38 percent is short and 36 percent adequate.

The condition of the corn and soybean crops deteriorated a little, 37 percent of the corn is now poor to very poor, 27 percent fair, and 36 percent good to excellent shape. Corn is 80 percent dough, 41 percent dent and 3 percent mature all well-ahead of the five-year average. 6 percent of the corn silage is harvested compared to none normally on this date, yields have varied greatly.

Soybeans are 23 percent poor to very poor, 33 percent fair and 44 percent good to excellent condition. 98 percent of the beans are setting pods, 6 points ahead of average and 18 percent have the leaves turning compared to 5 percent normally on this date.

Fourth-crop hay is 46 percent harvested with a number of reporters saying this crop is better than the third cutting.
