Trade matters to every farmer

A southern Indiana farmer says trade is critical to the livelihood of every US farmer.

Joe Steinkamp grows white corn, soybeans, and wheat.

“Without that trade the price that we receive at our local elevator would be significantly reduced,” he says.

He tells Brownfield market access, made available through trade agreements, allows farmers to compete on a level playing field.

He says farmers are concerned about the Trump administration threatening to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

“Between Mexico and Canada, they are in our top four export markets for both our value-added poultry, hogs, and cattle and our raw products like corn and soybeans,” he says.

Steinkamp says farmers must continue to speak out about the benefits of trade as agreements continue to be negotiated.
