Turkey prominent as USDA embarks on India trade mission

The USDA is embarking on a celebratory trade mission to India and turkey will be one of the few proteins represented.

Iowa Turkey Federation executive director Gretta Irwin says she is part of a trade mission to India lead by USDA undersecretary Alexis Taylor.

“And the whole purpose of this is to really celebrate the tariff drop that we’ve had, it used to be about 22 percent of a tariff into India and now it’s gone down to five percent.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the Midwest Poultry Federation PEAK Conference in Minneapolis Thursday, she said nearly 100 people are participating in the trip.

“So for USDA this is a really large trade mission, and I think that elevates the interest that America has in importing to India.”

And Irwin says as a protein, turkey fits well in Indian cuisine.

“I’m really excited to talk turkey and see where we can make some partnerships to increase their consumption of turkey and our exportability of turkey products from the U.S.”

The trade delegation leaves for India this week.
