Updated weed guide available

Extension services in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois have published an updated weed control guide to aid farmers in choosing effective weed management plans.  Bill Johnson, Purdue Extension weed scientist says in addition to adding Illinois to the coverage area, the guide has other updates.  “We also look at new herbicide premixes that have come onto the market and updated the section on controlling problem weeds,” he says. “That’s the section in the back of the guide where we try to spell out very specifically some of the recommendations of the control of our most problematic weeds.”

A couple of those problematic weeds include Palmer Amaranth and marestail.  “I think the big thing we need to think about with those herbicides is making sure we continue to use residual herbicides,” he says.  “That will be a little bit of a challenge this year with commodity prices going down.  We need to be ready to put the appropriate tank mix partners in with our post-emerge herbicides as well to try to try to go after those weeds with more than one site of action.”

The guide is free of charge and can be downloaded from Purdue Extension’s The Education Store.
