US/Japan deal might not be signed this week

The U.S. and Japan might not sign a much anticipated trade deal this week at the UN General Assembly because of President Trump’s threat to put tariffs on cars imported from Japan.

The two countries agreed in principle, earlier, to sign a bilateral trade deal this week. U.S. ag interests say a U.S./Japan trade deal would be very good for U.S. agriculture.

Deputy Ag Secretary Steve Censky told the audience at the AgriPulse Ag Forum in Kansas City, “We see that this framework agreement as having – being a big win and having all of the signs of being a big win for U.S. agriculture.”

If not signed this week, it’s anticipated they would continue to negotiate.
