USDA to manage any budget constraints

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the USDA will stay focused on its core mission with whatever budget they receive. Vilsack told reporters this morning that the federal budget situation is complicated by the continuing resolution on the 2011 budget. President Obama is to unveil a new budget next week…

“There’s a lot of discussion and talk in the House and the Senate about reducing the 2011 budget and the difficulties that will create for the USDA and for all other agencies,” says Vilsack, “It’s simply managing, in a relatively short period of time, in the remaining period of time, whatever the reductions are going to be.”

Vilsack say they may be faced with double the number of cuts in a six month period instead of a normal 12 month period unless Congress delegates where the cuts take place.

Vilsack made his comments while announcing new loans and grants for rural infrastructure, job-creating projects in 10 states. He says the USDA’s mission is to provide programs to farmers and rural communities and maintain the workforce that provides those services – while creating as many new jobs as quickly as his agency can.
