USTR urged to keep pressure on Mexico over GM corn ban

A member of the House Ways and Means subcommittee on trade is encouraging the U.S. Trade Representative to keep pressure on Mexico to withdraw its proposed ban on biotech corn.

Minnesota Republican Michelle Fischbach says the USTR should fully utilize the tools she has under the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement.

“We’ll continue to push Ambassador Tai to make sure that she is enforcing these things and that she’s doing everything she can.”

She tells Brownfield there are provisions in USMCA to hold Mexico accountable.

“And I’m glad that they’ve actually started to initiate those procedures through USMCA because we have those (and) need to follow through.”

Fischbach says a ban on biotech corn puts U.S. farmers at a disadvantage and compromises an ag export market valued at $30 billion.
